CANON: Professor Layton
NAME: Luke Triton
AGE: 12
CANON: Professor Layton
CANON HISTORY: http://layton.wikia.com/wiki/Luke_Triton
CANON PERSONALITY: Luke is a cheerful, precocious young boy who grew up in the town of Misthallery with his parents, Clark and Brenda Triton. While his childhood was a fairly normal, happy one, the events of The Last Specter threw his life into disarray as his mother went missing, his father became increasingly distant and preoccupied, and a mysterious ‘specter’ began appearing at night to destroy areas of the town. Feeling unable to turn to his father for help, Luke instead wrote a letter to famous archaeological scholar Professor Layton using Clark's name (as the two were old acquaintances), requesting that he come to Misthallery and help solve the mystery of the specter.
Though Luke had become significantly more withdrawn in personality by the time Layton arrived, the Professor quickly gained Luke’s trust by solving one of Luke’s riddles; afterwards, Luke actively helped the Professor and his assistant, Emmy, investigate the strange attacks. During this investigation, Luke's usual plucky, cheerful, and inquisitive personality began to resurface as he felt he could rely on his new friends. True to form, Layton quickly found Brenda and the reason for Clark’s strange behavior: Brenda had been kidnapped, and used to blackmail Clark. After the specter was defeated and upon reconciling with his parents, Luke, enamored with what he’d seen of Layton’s life and personality, insisted on accompanying the Professor out of Misthallery as his ‘apprentice’. With his parents’ permission, Luke began traveling with Layton, offering his assistance in puzzle-solving and gathering clues. Of particular use was Luke's ability to talk to animals.
Luke is friendly and upbeat, and very concerned with being a gentleman and reflecting positively on his mentor, Professor Layton. As a child, however, he is prone to impulsiveness and will absolutely break character to jump on beds or try to pull on someone’s face if he thinks they’re a villain in disguise. He likes animals and toys, especially stuffed bears, and prides himself on being able to solve puzzles like Layton. Though quick-witted and determined enough to figure out how to operate heavy machinery or ride a pony on short notice, Luke doesn’t have much in the way of combat training (he mostly runs away). And while the Professor will solve mysteries well ahead of the other characters, Luke is often left in the dark until Layton explains that secretly the entire populace of a town is robots or something -- which is not to say that Luke is particularly dumb, but because Layton is ridiculously competent.
Though he attempts to act like an adult, Luke is easily drawn into arguments and can be an easy target for teasing, as he takes great pride in being 'Professor Layton's number-one apprentice' and often reacts strongly when his status is questioned. Nevertheless, Luke gamely tries to keep up with the Professor and is extremely brave for a child, accompanying Layton on many dangerous adventures (fighting robots, using himself as bait for villains, getting chased down by runaway ferris wheels...). At one point in the series, he even gives his life to stop a horrible robot apocalypse, though he is quickly revived afterwards.
Luke is extremely loyal to the professor and looks on him as a sort of idol, constantly trying to emulate Layton’s behavior. He gets along with most other characters, though he develops particularly strong friendships with characters like Emmy Altava (the Professor’s assistant), Flora Reinhold (the Professor's ward), and Maya Fey -- despite their occasional squabbling over who the best assistant is, who deserves to go on adventures, and who would really prefer not to be smeared with glowing lichen for a prank.
Luke dislikes not being taken seriously, though his greatest fear is likely someone he cares about coming to harm (such as his parents or Layton). As a child, he is also daunted by typical scary supernatural menaces, like witches -- he knows they don't exist, of course, but sometimes those stories are awfully convincing.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Luke is a quick-witted young boy who is pretty decent at solving puzzles. His one special power is his ability to talk to animals -- parrots, lions, mice, etc. Also, he has a high tolerance for bullshit mysteries and dangerous adventures. He's decently quick-footed and is learning the violin.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Luke Triton
AU AGE: 12
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None, except that he can't talk to animals.
AU NAME: Luke Triton
AU AGE: 12
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None, except that he can't talk to animals.
AU HISTORY:
Since coming to Recolle, Luke has had a few bumps adjusting to the different culture and new environment, especially as his mother and father are both consumed with trying to get his father's veterinary business sorted out in its new location. He's experienced the typical new-kid awkwardness in class, as well as a few students making fun of his accent. However, Luke remains on good terms with his teachers and will no doubt become friends with his new neighbors over time.
Though he still possesses an adventurous spirit, AU Luke has never met Professor Layton, and has thus never been subjected to robot attacks, time travel, or witchcraft; his main role models are therefore his parents, not a tea-drinking, swordfighting archaelogy professor. Time will tell whether he'll meet anyone that inspires the same level of trust and loyalty that he had for the Professor. Which is not to say that he's necessarily worse off, just less versed in arcane topics. Luke remains quite independent for a kid, as he dislikes making his parents worry and is often left to entertain himself when they're absorbed with the family business. Since moving to Recolle, he's enjoyed exploring the city streets.
As Luke has not had the good fortune of having a mentor like Layton looking after him and solving problems for him for a few years, Luke has become a little more self-reliant and street smart, and a little less into Being a Gentleman and not jumping to conclusions when presented with mysteries; instead of immediately looking to the Professor when he encounters a conflict or tall tale, Luke will attempt to resolve things himself (sometimes to his detriment, since he's still a bit impulsive). Naturally, he's familiar with things like cell phones and the Internet.
Because he retains his small-town demeanor, Luke maintains friendships with a few of his old schoolmates in London mostly by postal mail, rather than texts, which he considers less personal. His grandparents and other relatives are similarly all back across the pond, though his parents has promised to visit once in a while.
- Luke was born and raised in a small town in Great Britain, where most of his family lived. Their family history in the town went back quite a ways, with his grandfather once acting as mayor.
- When Luke was about 10, his parents moved to London. It was two years later that they decided to come to Recolle and make a new home there.
- Luke found the transition a bit jarring, as he was used to small-town life and being on first-name terms with all his neighbors. However, he adjusted with his parents' help, and soon learned how to navigate the subway and his new school. His grades are generally positive.
- His father is a veterinarian and his mother is a former housewife and current vet technician. Currently, his father is trying to get settled in his new veterinary practice, which leaves Luke often on his own to fill his free time.
- Luke has helped with his father's veterinary practice in the past, looking after animals and occasionally even manning the front desk when the receptionist needed to go on break. He's a common sight in the office and continues to care for animals despite having been clawed, pecked, and bitten a few times over the years.
- When he was younger, Luke used to bring home wildlife, like injured snapping turtles. His mother was horrified when he brought in a garter snake.
- Luke has played the violin since he was young, and is now quite good at it! He plays in the school orchestra and takes excellent care of his instrument (although this is also the source of some teasing from classmates)
- Luke loves tea, especially if it's sweetened. His favorite foods include roast lamb and sandwiches on buttered bread.
- Luke still sleeps with a stuffed bear.
